ARTIFICIAL BANKS

Roques-sur-Garonne · Haute-Garonne | France /// 3200 m2

Heterogeneous territory, the area of the old gravel pits of Roques-sur-Garonne is composed of various landscapes often inaccessible. The suburban sprawl happens with significant lack of equipment and services and on some plots, water sanitation is not complete. Local inhabitants use the car even to access local amenities. However, this territory is rich by its diversity of landscapes of different natures (the lakes on the old gravel pits, the agricultural fields…). We propose the creation of a network of public spaces that promote soft mobility, allowing at a local scale environmentally friendly transport, by alternative means to the car. This network links a succession of spaces of diverse nature (agricultural, sporting, cultural) between existing and proposed equipment and services. Thus designed, such a network contributes to the legibility of the territory, and allows to create a landscape system that can be used on an extra-communal scale. The creation of new habitat would be done in a diffuse, surgical way on the existing urban fabric with interventions on urban waste lands and larger plots. We made the choice to build this habitat as an artificial bank, near the old gravel pits, now transformed into lakes.
