URBAN – PUBLIC SPACE

Leça da palmeira · Matosinhos | Portugal /// with Carla Lourenço + Teresa Sánchez Táboas /// 15.000 – 20.000 m2

This project aims to restructure a vast territory, prioritizing public spaces and urban transportation as guiding principles. To address uncertainties related to the area’s evolution, we propose flexible structures capable of accommodating new activities.
To enhance the area’s appeal for implementing these activities, we suggest adding support facilities and the option to introduce equipment developed through partnerships between the economic and educational sectors, such as professional schools. Complementary facilities, including canteens, are also proposed. Key “nuclear” facilities like an auditorium, a library, and exhibition spaces form part of the plan.
These urban facilities would support economic activities while remaining accessible to residents. Sharing these spaces with the local population could foster a sense of belonging and strengthen the identity of diverse communities involved.
Additionally, we have identified reconversion zones, such as old warehouses, that could be repurposed for new uses.
Finally, the creation of an extensive network of pedestrian and bicycle routes is a cornerstone of our strategy. This network offers alternative modes of transportation to reduce car dependency, catering to both daily needs and sports or leisure activities.
