BELITHA VILLAS

House extension in London | 2019 /// 116 m2
In collaboration with Oliver Leech

Belitha Villas is located in the Barnsbury Conservation Area in the London borough of Islington. The property is situated on the south side of Belitha Villas in a semi-detached “villa” that has since been converted into multiple residential units.
The project involves a single-story extension with a flat roof and glazed openings overlooking the garden. A semi-open canopy extends over the patio, designed to provide privacy from the upper apartments (and vice versa). It also functions as a shading device to prevent sunlight from overheating the interior spaces.
The extension will be constructed using pale buff long-format bricks to complement yet distinguish it from the existing house. A band of reconstituted stone above the brick visually connects the extension to the patio canopy and establishes a visual alignment with the height of the neighboring balcony.
The glazing will feature high-performance, energy-efficient aluminum and wood frames. The sliding glass doors provide access, natural ventilation, and views of the landscaped garden.
The building’s green roof offers environmental benefits by reducing heat loss and retaining rainwater while contributing to biodiversity conservation.
