Atelier Nuno Merino + Manuel Serra | Afurada – Gaia · Portugal | 2018-19 /// 140 m2
The intervention is part of the complex Douro Marina, a sports and leisure infrastructure with exceptional views of the city of Oporto and the natural reserve of the mouth of Douro River. It intends to offer a complementary response in terms of integrated services for the marina as a whole. It explores the idea of modularity and flexibility, closely linked to the module used as the base for its construction, like a sort of Tetris that evolves and adapts over time. It consists of the installation of a set of recycled marine containers on the maintenance platform for the boats. The image of the container is preserved, despite the changes introduced to ensure adaptation to the needs of the program. This maritime allusion reinforces their belonging to the place. The set is marked by a volumetrically affirmative moment, between the sculptural piece and industrial icon in the landscape. This “head” of the set, composed of five containers stacked in apparent precarious balance, has as a function to create a landmark in the landscape and simultaneously be a magnet of people, generating a set of terraces / balconies to observe the birds, to watch the regattas and training of the sailing school or to simply relax or watch the sunset.
